*** Now with new material -- Hester and Galen's favorite Mud Pie Recipe ***

As a child Hester Wyatt escaped slavery, but now the dark skinned beauty is a dedicated member of Michigan's Underground railroad, offering other runaways a chance at the freedom she has learned to love. When one of her fellow conductors brings her an injured man to hide, Hester doesn't hesitate…even after she is told about the price on his head.

The man in question is the great conductor known as the "Black Daniel" a vital member of the North's Underground railroad network. But Hester finds him so rude and arrogant, she begins to question her vow to hide him.

When the injured and beaten Galen Vachon, aka, the Black Daniel awakens in Hester's cellar, he is unprepared for the feisty young conductor providing his care. As a member of one of the wealthiest free Black families in New Orleans, Galen has turned his back on the lavish living he is accustomed to in order to provide freedom to those enslaved in the South.

However, as he heals he cannot turn his back on Hester Wyatt. Her innocence fills him like a breath of fresh air and he is determined to make this gorgeous and intelligent woman his own…

Yet…there are traitors to be discovered, slave catchers to be evaded and Hester's heart to be won before she and Galen can find the freedom that only true love can bring.

I have been hearing about Beverly Jenkins for years.
When Indigo was selected as our book club selection I didn't know what to expect. Historical romance didn't sound appealing.
I was drawn in from the epilogue. It actually pissed me off that a person would do something so stupid in the name of love.
Indigo is the love story of Hester Wyatt, a conductor on the Underground Railroad and Galen Vachon, a wealthy Frenchman with a secret.
The book explores slavery, racism, and the abolitionist movement. You are given a history lesson while rooting for these two to get together. I could not put this book down. I laughed, cried and talked back to the characters. I also enjoyed the strong female character. Hester wasn't a damsel in distress. Jenkins has such an eloquent way with words. You often forget that you are reading a historical romance because love is a universal theme that transcends time periods. After reading Indigo I am now a fan and will definitively be reading more of her work. I regret that it took me so long to discover what the hype was all about.

Indigo Beverly Jenkins 9781495368219 Books Reviews

I have read many romance novels but Indigo by Beverly Jenkins, is my favorite. Indigo is the only novel that I have read at least once every year since the book came out in paperback. If you love historical romance, this is a must read. Only Beverly Jenkins can weave in some history of the Underground Railroad and great a passionate love affair in one book. Love It!
I definitely enjoyed this novel. Being that it was the first novel that I have ever read by the highly acclaimed author, I was certainly impressed. Every character, every scene, and every scenario was so vivid that I felt like I was seeing them in person. Not to mention that her word choices were tastefully chosen. I’ll definitely be on the hunt for more work written by Beverly Jenkins... she’s amazing!

Indigo was selected as our monthly book club selection. This historical romance novel had everything from love, lust, betrayal, suspense, and lessons on African American history. This book was so well written that I was able to envision all the characters. It made me laugh and tear up. I just loved this book!!!

After reading Indigo, I looked up the author and was pleasantly surprised to find out she was from Michigan. It was nice to learn about the the different cities and towns in Michigan. I’m sure to reminisce about Indigo when I travel to and through areas mentioned in story. I loved everything about this book and forward to reading more from Beverly Jenkins.

This was the first book by Beverly Jenkins that I read. That was a year ago, and I've since read her entire historical romance catalogue and am eagerly waiting for the release of her latest one scheduled for later this month. Before reading Indigo (and Jenkins' other books), I couldn't imagine how one could write a "standard genre romance" story with its requisite steaminess/banter/happy ending about black folks in the U.S. set between the 1700's and the Reconstruction that wouldn't in some way either trivialize or romanticize the trauma of slavery, Jim Crow, and white supremacy. Yet Jenkins' work is a master class in seamlessly weaving in the historically accurate narratives of dignity, resistance, survival, and heroism lived by folks of color throughout U.S. history within engaging, funny, and passionate stories of love and romance. Indigo in particular brings to life both the dangers and heroic feats of the Underground Railroad conductors (both real and fictional) while showing us that, like all people, they too fell in love and had passionate sex. I am so impressed with the depth of research that went into developing this story, and all of Jenkins' historical novels! I certainly hadn't expected to walk away with an expanded knowledge of African American history when I picked up this "romance" novel!!
This book was chosen by a book club I belong to. I had never heard of the author before and since I didn't even read the blurb/synopsis before I bought the book, I had NO idea what I was about to read. I assumed, however, that it would just be another Old School romance.
I was wrong. I was so, so wrong.
This book is BEAUTIFUL. Both Galen and Hester (Indigo) are beautifully fleshed out. They're both intelligent, capable, and compassionate, but they aren't too perfect to be believable. They communicate well (gasp! What a concept in romance) and support one another in a really lovely way.
What really makes this book special, though, is the incredible amount of history poured into the story. I learned so much about the abolitionist period in this book, but it was presented as an integral part of the story rather than either an afterthought or a dry history lesson. It was amazing.
Yes, the love scenes had some of the purple prose Old School romance is known for, but even that didn't detract from how wonderful this book is.
As a final thought, I think that it's fitting that this was a selection for February, which is Black History Month.
This was surprisingly good to read. It's been a long time since I sat down with an historical romance and this book reminded me of why I love the genre; great dialogue, compelling characters, easily resolved conflict.

The author didn't bore us with the more trite romance trope of miscommunication and the leading female character was not flighty, a harridan, or weak. On top of it all, there is some historical context included that enhances the characters and the plot.

There are a couple of complaints. The copy editing is poor. I found numerous typos. Not much historical research went into this other than knowledge of the Underground Railroad and the players and events leading up to the Civil War.

All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend.
