Someone is stealing souls, and Cay's is next.

Where Cayenne Jensen grew up, Warrior Rock Lighthouse stands sentinel above waters split by Sauvie Island, Washington and Oregon states, and the good and evil intentions of a serial killer.

Found adrift in a storm-tossed boat on the Columbia River, four-year-old Cay believes the lighthouse shadows have forever hidden the reason she was abandoned, and her mother's fate. Now, as an adult, she is drowning in the dark and frigid currents of losing her husband, her home, and being suspected of murder.

The secrets of her past, and how they tie to her present, remain hidden—until an innocent encounter makes her the target of a twisted mind. To survive, Cay must cut open memories, face her fears, and follow a trail of raw bones into the killer's lair.

"Split River" carries the reader through an idyllic world of lush vegetation, wildlife, and island people, as a young woman struggles to channel her fractured life streams and wash clear the mystery of Warrior Rock.

Split River eBook Riley Hill Reviews

I had mixed feelings about the beginning of this one. A lot is made of the issue of show not tell in fiction, although there are exceptions. In this case, a little back story to the setting is written even before the Contents so that the reader has been told the opening situation. I saw the reason for it once I had read the prologue, much of which reads like a children's tale as it is being read to a little girl who will become the protagonist of the story that begins in chapter one. It is towards the end of the prologue that the reader begins to experience the darker nature of the story ahead, which is no light-hearted fairytale as the story told to the child might lead the unsuspecting reader to believe.

The story begins with a disturbing relationship breakdown which leads into a mystery. It's written with some really wonderful descriptive phrases and a flair for word usage that I normally wouldn't associate with books that relate disturbing scenarios and dead bodies, but the hint of supernatural goings on at the beginning perhaps explains why it is better written than the average crime drama. I would love to see what this author could do with a supernatural story.

I did like the fact that I wasn't sure for some time whether there would be some supernatural activity or whether a more mundane explanation for the mysteries would arise. I'll leave that for the reader to discover for themselves, but I will say that the twist about 60% through kept my attention on a very high action sequence of events that resulted in me finishing the book in one sitting from that point.

While murder mysteries are not my favourite end of the Horror spectrum, this was well executed and kept my interest. The writing itself is exceptional and I will look forward to reading more from this author. I give it a strong 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Split River, e-book formatted by House of Lit and authored by Riley Hill is a most unusual story that follows the life of a young woman who works as an auxiliary ranger in the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area that splits the river lying between the states of Washington and Oregon.
Cayenne Jensen, a child of part blood of an extinct Indian tribe indigenous to the area, is on a trip to the prominent lighthouse on the island when her mother disembarks telling the four-year-old to wait and they would look for treasure. A descending storm causes the improperly secured boat to slip its mooring and drift down the roaring Columbia River. She is rescued by a mariner, the mother never reappears, she is raised by her grandmother, has two close friends while growing, the boy she eventually marries and the attachment to the girl remains strong. However, the marriage dissolves, the friend initiates activities that prove dangerous, strange characters appear, the ex-husband's girlfriend is murdered and all seem somehow to be relevant in her shadowy beliefs about involvement of the lighthouse and the reason for her mother's abandonment and disappearance.
With respect to the mechanics, the book presents a well-written, plot driven venue that deals with a number of individuals on the fringe of normalcy and some beyond, most of whom in this reader's opinion, could benefit from a more extensive characterization. Bits and pieces are supplied as the story advances, but much is left to conjecture. Cay, admittedly grossly psychologically scarred, still appears almost too naïve in too much of her activity. Action by some other characters also requires the reader to `fill in' material. Description of police procedure and dealing with associated affairs additionally is quite loosely handled and credibility occasionally is stretched. In spite of these various shortcomings, many readers and especially plot-driven enthusiasts will enjoy this book because of the somewhat dark `mystical' air surrounding the plot and the meaningful manner in which the writing propels the story at an enjoyable pace. This is a prime case of reviews being misleading. I rarely feel as though I've wasted time reading. This book certainly made me feel that way. It just rambles around in vagueness. I gave it 1 star just to give something for the effort that was put into getting it published.
This was a good book and a very exciting read. It kept your attention to the very end. A surprise ending. Will be reading more from this author.
It was a good read. Cool setting, this big island up by Portland, Oregon that divides the Columbia River. The way she describes it, I want to visit. Interesting main character, Cay. Messed up by her marriage breaking up and then all this stuff happens to dredge up bad things that happened when she was little. How she tries to figure it all out and gets into the sights of this nasty murderer was really fascinating. Riley Hill glues it all together. I'm not the world's biggest mystery/thriller fan, but the atmospherics alone were enough to keep me reading, and the story rocked.
Split River A Sauvie Island Mystery/Thriller (Volume 1)
Rarely do I finish a book in a weekend. This mystery/thriller held my attention! Don't want to give away too much, but I was thrilled with the direction the heroine evolved throughout the story. I am a Stephen King, Dean Koontz fan, this book was right up my alley. Can't wait to download my next book by Riley Hill!
